Fantasy Football Weekend Roundup, Week 2

The top story lines from Week 2 of the 2010 fantasy football season.

Week 2 of the fantasy football 2010 season was an exciting one including several no-names turned into fantasy stars and a rookie exploding onto the scene.

In other words, it was another normal week in fantasy football.

Here are the top story lines from Week 2 of the 2010 fantasy football season.

Jahvid Best takes center stage

The Lions running back had a game fantasy footballers dream about on Sunday. As a running back, he had 78 yards and two touchdowns, which are impressive numbers.

Except that’s not all he did. He also caught a whopping nine balls for 154 yards and added another score.

His total numbers probably won a few fantasy games this week: 132 total yards and three touchdowns.

Best was already considered a good option in Detroit because he can be explosive at times, but his performance on Sunday against the Eagles will go down as one of his best career games.

The replacements shine in Week 2

Fantasy football players that consistently win their leagues are always able to find a steal across the league. That may come in the form of an injury to a key player and pouncing on his replacement on the waiver wire. That's the case this week when key injuries put the backups to Falcons RB Michael Turner and Eagles QB Kevin Kolb in the game.

RB Jason Snelling replaced Turner and put up "wow" numbers against the Cardinals. Snelling rushed the ball 24 times for 129 yards and a pair of scores. In the passing game, he was targeted five times and caught all five balls for another 57 yards plus a touchdown. Final numbers: 186 yards and three touchdowns. Not a bad replacement.

QB Michael Vick got the start in place of Kolb and didn't quiet any quarterback controversies in Philly. He completed 21-of-34 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed the ball seven times for 37 yards.

Jay Cutler continues solid work

Cutler is becoming someone you can count on in fantasy football. Last year he was OK but threw for a ton of interceptions making some shy away from him.

It appears the Mike Martz effect is working.

After throwing for 372 yards last week, Cutler responded with 277 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s quickly pushing himself to the top of the second tier quarterbacks.

Maybe Mark Sanchez is a good fantasy football quarterback

I suggested to folks before the fantasy football season started that Mark Sanchez would not be a good fantasy play. The Jets may be favorites to go on a run in the playoffs but that's not because of Sanchez's arm, I said at the time.

How does Sanchez respond now? 220 yards and three touchdowns against a solid Patriots defense.

Sanchez isn’t someone you want starting every week -- at least not at this point -- but he’s demonstrating that he can be a good quarterback at times.

Some things never change

There are some things in fantasy football that just do not change. Here are the big performances this week that are no surprise:

  • Peyton Manning: 20-of-26 for 255 yards and three touchdowns
  • Matt Schaub: 38-of-52 for 497 yards, three touchdowns and one interception
  • Aaron Rodgers: 19-of-29 for 255 yards and three touchdowns (one rushing)
  • Andre Johnson: 12 receptions for 158 yards and one touchdown

Expect big stats out of those players most games this year.
