Bill Cowher entered the NFL as a player in 1979 but didn't make his mark until nearly 30 years later as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Bill Cowher Would Return To NFL In Right Situation; Teams Have Called
Every year since his leave from the Steelers, there have been rumors surrounding the NFL coaching rumor mill that Cowher is a candidate for this job or that. Lately, he's been tied to the Carolina Panthers job but of course rumors had him tied to just about every opening over the last three years.
Cowher recently talked to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review and said he does get that coaching urge at times.
A return to coaching remains on his mind, but it does not consume him, he said.
“I am not going to go back into coaching, just to go back into coaching,” he said. “It has to be the right situation. And I don’t know what the right situation consists of.”
Cowher says he has heard from NFL teams trying to hire him away every year since he’s retired but the right situation hasn’t popped up. It sounds like Cowher hasn’t given up the thought of coaching one day. He says with each passing year there’s a bigger void because he does miss the game.
In the meantime, Cowher says, he’s spending time with his family, particularly after his wife, Kaye, recently passed away from cancer.
