A few weeks ago, it was reported that the Cincinnati Reds had offered manager Dusty Baker a contract extension. Baker - whose current contract expires after this season - was said to be mulling it over, but while he won't give anyone a concrete response, all indications point to Baker returning in 2011, and presumably again in 2012 and 2013. Writes Hal McCoy:
Dusty Baker Set To Sign Contact Extension, Remain Reds Manager
Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker will be back next season, armed with a new multi-year contract - probably a three-year extension.
The deal could be announced before the Reds begin postseason play next mid-week for the first time in 15 years, but more likely after postseason play is completed.
A close confidante to Baker told me Wednesday, “They’re close, just a matter of dotting I’s and crossing T’s and Dusty will be back managing the Reds next year.”
It only makes sense, given that Baker has guided the Reds to their first playoff appearance since 1995. Even if the man weren’t well-liked in the clubhouse, it would still be a PR nightmare to let him go. And since this is Baker, who is beloved by everyone, there’s just no way the team lets him walk. He simply means and represents too much.
Baker took over a Reds team that, in 2007, finished 72-90. In his first year, they improved to 74-88. In his next year, they improved to 78-84. And this year, they’re 88-70 and preparing for October. With the Reds having come in as an underdog, Baker is a very strong candidate for NL Manager of the Year.
