2010 US Open, Day 6: Kaia Kanepi Upsets Fourth-Seeded Jelena Jankovic

On Saturday, Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, a 31-seed at the U.S. Open, upset fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic, putting things away by a score of 6-2 7-6(1).

The 25-year-old Kanepi entered the match ranked No. 32 in the world, was ranked as high as No. 18 a year ago. This is the biggest surprise in the women’s singles tournament so far, says BBC Sport:

Blimey, that was quick. Jankovic collapses completely in the tie-break and Kaia Kanepi runs away with it. She drops only one point to complete a shock 6-2 7-6 (6-1) victory and will play Patty Schnyder or Yanina Wickmayer next. Jankovic is the first big-name to fall in the women’s draw, mainly because she never got to grips with the wind.
