Chris Johnson, who last season became only the sixth running back in NFL history to eclipse 2,000 yards rushing in a season - not to mention broke the single-season record in yards from scrimmage - is saying that he aims to top 2,500 yards rushing in 2010.
Chris Johnson Promises Another 2,000-Yard Season; History Suggests Otherwise
↵Uh, hey! Sure! Break the existing NFL record by nearly 400 yards. Why not?
↵Of course, nothing’s hurt by a little overconfidence. No doubt fantasy owners are glad to hear he’s not content to rest on his laurels from 2009.
↵Looking at the list of rushers who have topped 2,000 yards rushing in a season, Barry Sanders holds the best follow-up performance, with 1,491 rushing yards in 1998, after running for 2,053 in 1997. Terrell Davis may have been robbed by a torn ACL in Week 4 of his follow-up campaign in 1999, but he wasn’t really on pace to duplicate his efforts at that point anyway.
↵This all isn’t to say that Johnson won’t defy the odds and but up another similarly insane season. Only that those odds are indeed stacked against him.
