Can you feel it? The NFL season is just a day away from kicking off. That’s the sweetest sounding sentence you’ll ever hear. So, along with the actual games comes the other game - the one we all obsess about - Fantasy Football. Each week on Wednesday we’ll be doing a Fantasy Football Q&A. So let’s get going with the Week 1 edition.
Fantasy Football Q&A: Week 1 Edition
Fantasy Football kicks off on Thursday. Each Wednesday we’ll be doing a Fantasy Football Q&A column. Check out the Week 1 edition.
Who will be the highest scoring rookie of the 2010 class? - Jason
It's hard to pick anyone but Chargers RB Ryan Mathews here. Chargers GM A.J. Smith is among the best in the business so when he leaps ahead in the first round to grab someone like Mathews, you know there's a good chance he'll be a solid player.
He enters the perfect situation. The Chargers are a force passing the ball so that takes some of the pressure off of him. They've also got Darren Sproles lining up in the backfield so he'll take some pressure off as well. The bottom line is that Mathews is entering a great situation and there are other parts of the offense that will make you overlook him.
Who are some good sleepers I can add to my roster early that will pay off later? - Kev
Chris Chambers from the Chiefs is getting overlooked after having a decent season with the Chiefs. The Chiefs only other receiving threat is Dwayne Bowe and Matt Cassel seemed to develop a rapport with Chambers late in the year. The Chiefs will likely be behind a lot so even though their offense isn't very good the receivers will get plenty of second half looks.
Bernard Berrian is another player that should be given consideration. He's not your typical sleeper since most people have heard of him, but his stats should be inflated in the first half of the season with Sidney Rice out. He's a deep threat -- a ball Brett Favre likes to throw -- and figures to be a significant part of one of the better offenses in the NFL.
Better end of the year stats - Donovan McNabb or Kevin Kolb? - Bill
Kevin Kolb.
Donovan McNabb is probably the better quarterback right now but he's also in an offense that just might line Joey Galloway up as a starter. Joey Galloway is 38 years old. Kolb simply has better options both in the passing as well as a better running game to take the pressure off. Andy Reid has a heck of a system in Philadelphia and Kolb should benefit from that.
Does Larry Fitzgerald's value significantly drop because Derek Anderson will be throwing him the ball? - Greg
Yeah, it'll probably drop a little because Kurt Warner is ten times the quarterback Derek Anderson is. However, you gotta remember that Anquan Boldin isn't there anymore to take receptions away from Fitzgerald. If anything, I think this means Fitzgerald gets more looks. Unfortunately for fantasy football players, those balls might not be on target.
First off, there's Adrian Peterson. With Brett Favre's first game back, the Vikings may want to lean on Peterson's running ability to help them get through the game. This will be a shootout so Peterson will get plenty of opportunities to score.
Second of course is Drew Brees. This is a game that was made for him. These are two high-scoring offenses and Brees seems to thrive in shootouts. Expect lots of fireworks from him.
Peterson and Brees are arguably two of the best-bet fantasy football players in the league and they should each put up big points in week one.
