There aren’t many unfavorable match-ups for the Saints when it comes to the core parts of their passing attack - Drew Brees, Marques Colston and, to a lesser extent, Robert Meachem, Devery Henderson and Jeremy Shockey - but conditions are looking especially good going into the season opener against a beaten-up Vikings unit.
Vikings’ Battered Secondary Makes Saints Passing Game Tantalizing For Opener
↵Minnesota’s strong front seven is good enough to disrupt a passing attack, but the pressure will be that much more intense to do so, as the Vikings will only have three healthy cornerbacks going into Thursday night’s game in the Superdome. Chris Cook, who was already slated to replace incumbent starter Cedric Griffin, has been ruled out. Griffin, returning this week to practice after he had reconstructive knee surgery eight months ago, is unlikely to go but officially listed as questionable by the Vikings. That leaves Antoine Winfield, Lito Sheppard and Asher Allen as the only available corners.
↵It also certainly doesn’t help that the team recently was forced to deal cornerback Benny Sapp to Miami to acquire Greg Camarillo as emergency assistance at wide receiver.
↵That means, unless Jared Allen has a monster game and the Vikings can get to Brees frequently, it looks like the Saints are primed for a big game through the air.
