West Virginia is the first team in the 2011 NCAA Tournament advancing to the March Madness bracket’s round of 32. The Mountaineers defeated No. 12 Clemson on Thursday, 84-76, and will face the winner of Kentucky vs. Princeton.
March Madness Scores: WVU Advances In NCAA Bracket Past Clemson, 84-76
Andre Young led the Clemson scoring with 22 points, along with three other Tigers in double-digit scoring. For WVU, Darryl Bryant led the way, dropping 19. Kevin Jones also played a big role, scoring 17 points to go along with nine boards.
Clemson appeared to be in control of the game early, leading by 10 several different times in the first half. But WVU went on a 9-0 run to close out the half, tying the contest at 40-all at halftime. In the second half, the game was all Mountaineers as Clemson quickly faded. WVU took the lead less than a minute into the second half and never relinquished it. It’ll be argued that Clemson was tired from having playing its first round game less than 48 hours prior, but the Tigers do have a history of blowing leads. Either way, the Tigers are going home, and WVU is moving on.
