Panthers Honing In On QB Cam Newton In 2011 NFL Draft

The Carolina Panthers hold the top pick in the 2011 NFL draft and plenty of folks are predicting they’ll go with Auburn QB Cam Newton. Several weeks ago, many were predicting their pick would be Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert but that was apparently an anomaly as most draft experts now say it’ll be Newton.

The latest sign the Panthers are honing in on Newton is Peter King’s report that Panthers officials requested game tape from Newton’s time at Blinn College.

“They wanted to see a little more tape,” the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach of that junior college team, Ronny Feldman, told me Friday night. “Of all the teams looking at him here, Carolina’s been the big one. They called me twice this week.”

Interesting stuff. It’s hard to read a whole lot into what the Panthers are doing because draft month is also called liars’ month. Each team has a reason to conceal their pick. That said, the Panthers are picking first so they really have no reason to hide what they’re planning to do.

There’s still plenty of time for things to change but right now the best guess at who the Panthers will draft is Newton.
