The last few weeks it seems most everyone has QB Cam Newton atop their 2011 NFL mock drafts. There was a brief period where QB Blaine Gabbert was considered the top quarterback but that has passed and it's all Newton these days.
2011 NFL Draft: Cam Newton To Panthers At ‘80 Percent’
ESPN's Adam Schefter said on SportsCenter Tuesday morning that Newton-to-Carolina is currently at 80 percent in his opinion. I think that sounds about right. The overwhelming majority believes the Panthers will be going with Newton but it's hard to figure out exactly what they'll do without an on-the-record confirmation from GM Marty Hurney that Newton is their guy.
In years past, the Panthers could start negotiating with the top pick prior to the draft. This year, with the NFL lockout, that can’t happen so we’re left wondering who they’ll pick.
But right now, on April 19, Cam Newton is the heavy favorite to be in Carolina and join a division that includes Matt Ryan, Drew Brees and Josh Freeman.
