One crucial piece of Florida's first offense under new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis fell into place on Friday as John Brantley, the beleaguered quarterback who split time with two other QBs in 2009, announced he will return for his senior season at Florida. Brantley was reportedly seeking a transfer after struggling in Florida's spread-option offense under Urban Meyer, but the switch from Meyer to Will Muschamp brought with it the promise of a pro-style attack.
QB John Brantley Will Return To Florida For Senior Season
The hiring of Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator confirmed the move, and thus Brantley’s decision to stay for his final year in college. His father spoke for him in the Palm Beach Post about the move.
“Once they said there was going to be a pro-style, transferring wasn’t even a question.”
Brantley, a drop-back pocket passer, will be asked to do little option or running in Weis’ offense. His only serious competition will come from incoming freshman Jeff Driskel, a highly touted recruit who has remained committed to Florida despite the coaching change. All in all, a situation that looked very unstable for the Gators become somewhat more solid with Brantley’s announcement, though he remains a reclamation project at best for noted QB guru Weis.
