The 2010 Philadelphia Eagles had an explosive offense and a defense prone to implosions, especially later in the year. Part of their efforts to remedy that will, somewhat surprisingly, involve a new defensive coordinator.
Report: Eagles Fire Defensive Coordinator Sean McDermott
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen tweets that Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has been fired.
Filed to ESPN: Phialdelphia Eagles have fired defensive coordinator Sean McDermottThe change comes, as Mortensen notes, after Eagles head coach Andy Reid said McDermott would be retained in a season-ending news conference.
But McDermott’s defense was the worst in the NFL in the red zone, set a new franchise record for most touchdown passes allowed, and allowed 23.4 points per game.
McDermott, 36, had been with the Eagles since 1999, and was elevated to defensive coordinator after the Eagles’ longtime defensive coordinator, Jim Johnson, passed away after a battle with cancer. McDermott was also considered one of the NFL’s brighter young coaches, making his firing a puzzling decision by the Eagles.
