Hot on the trail of their first ever Champions League berth and in the midst of one of their most successful seasons in history, Sunderland is now reportedly trying to arrange a transfer for Michael Bradley. The United States National Team midfielder is currently playing for Bundesliga side Borussia Moenchengladbach, for whom he has been a starting until surprisingly coming off the bench this week. Bradley is, of course, the son of U.S. coach Bob Bradley and was a starter on the U.S. World Cup team. Sunderland is likely looking for a backup plan for captain Lee Cattermole, who has been battling injuries and linked to transfer rumors.
Sunderland Seeking Michael Bradley Transfer, Report Says
As recently as the 2006-07 season, Sunderland was playing in the Championship where it has spent three of the past 10 seasons. Now, they sit sixth in the table, just four points shy of fourth-place Chelsea with 13 matches left to play. Even a berth in Europa, for which they currently qualify, would be a rarity for a team that has never finished higher than seventh in the Premier League. Sunderland, founded in 1890, made their EPL debut in 1995 and has mostly been in relegation battles since then.
Adding Bradley would be an attempt to bolster their most successful season to date. The Black Cats are coming off a 1-1 draw with Newcastle and are riding a three-match unbeaten streak.
Bradley currently has a year and a half left on his contract with Moenchengladbach, which has just 13 points in 18 matches and is at the bottom of the Bundesliga table. This would likely be the best chance for Moenchengladbach to get top dollar for Bradley, who was one of the United States’ best players at the most recent World Cup.
