7500 To Holte: Michael Bradley Would Have Been Better Off In Turkey
Maybe it will come as little shock that 7500 to Holte's Kirsten Schlewitz is not particularly enthused about United States National Team midfielder Michael Bradley is joining Aston Villa. Schlewitz is, after all, hardly a USMNT fangirl. But her tempered enthusiasm has less to do with her opinions of the Stars and Stripes and more to do with an honest belief that Bradley would have had a better chance to develop in Turkey.
To be honest, I was all for Bradley moving to Galatasaray in the Turkish Super League. Gala, like Villa, got off to a poor start in the league this season, and are currently eighth in the table, unacceptable for a club used to taking titles regularly. Acquiring Bradley could have helped them make a push for European competition, and while it’s almost impossible to think they could grab the title this season, they certainly could in the next. Bradley could have been a huge star in Turkey, consequently raising his profile and putting him in position to be a starter in one of the big leagues in Europe.
She goes on to point out that Bradley will likely do little more than bolster Villa’s depth. Maybe he can work his way into some starts, but that doesn’t seem likely. Bradley enters a crowded midfield, and considering he’s really not much of a specialist in any particular area, it doesn’t seem likely that Villa manager Gerard Houllier is going to expose the 23-year-old anymore than necessary.
