We know for sure that one thing is true: Chelsea made a bid for Fernando Torres, and Liverpool rejected it. What we don't know is exactly how much Chelsea bid for him in the first place. Reports are currently varying between £35m and £60m, depending on what English paper or website you read. We Ain't Got No History's Graham MacAree thinks that all of these figures seen a bit high, and speculates about the reports:
Liverpool Reject Bid From Chelsea For Fernando Torres, Estimated Figures Vary
It's also important to note that Liverpool's denial only confirms that a bid has been rejected - none of the figures mentioned by any media outlet have been validated, and some are simply freakishly outlandish. Chelsea will not buy Fernando Torres for £60M - and I have my doubts they'd buy him for £35M either, come to that. Anyway, there's been a bid made, and a bid rejected, unless the media have simply taken to making up quotes from clubs now, which I guess is entirely possible considering what happened earlier with the Guardian.
That last piece, of course, refers to today's controversy in which The Guardian hyped up a big story, which turned out to just be a report that Inter Milan may bid for Gareth Bale. A lot of people didn't react favorably to that news, one of them being SBNation's Aaron Campeau.
Hopefully, there’s a lot more to this Torres story on the way, but even if there isn’t, it’s funny how wild rumors and speculation about a Torres transfer still have more substance than the “Guardian exclusive.”
