West Ham United have moved to address their lack of firepower in rather bizarre fashion, securing the services of out-of-form* Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane until the end of the season. Keane is expected to report to Upton Park tomorrow, and the Hammers clearly think they've got a good deal - David Gold was practically gushing about how happy he was.
Robbie Keane Moves To West Ham On Loan
“We’re delighted to sign a world class striker. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy drives a hard bargain but we’ve got our man.”
Take a moment to savour that conversation. Imagine the perplexed look creeping across Daniel Levy’s face as he’s asked whether he’d be willing to part with any of his world class strikers. Picture the furrows on his brow as he tries to work out whether he’s being prank-called. Share in his joy as he realises, slowly, that West Ham are serious.
Robbie Keane is not world class. Robbie Keane at his peak, was once a good striker. But he was never any more than that and he is now some way away from said peak. Spurs are dying for quality striking options up front and yet he still can’t get a game at White Hart Lane, which speaks volumes about his performance whenever he’s bribed Redknapp into letting him come on. Robbie Keane is bad, and West Ham are making a mistake.
“The next 14 games will be as important a 14 games as there have been in the history of the football club.”
Well it’s a good thing you brought in Robbie Keane, isn’t it?
*Form being a euphemism for ability.
