Kevin McCauley of SB Nation's Tottenham Hotspur blog Cartilage Free Captain has more information regarding Robbie Keane's rather strange move to Upton Park, where it turns out that West Ham United will be paying the striker's full wages as well as having the option to buy him at a vastly inflated price should the Hammers somehow avoid relegation this season. Here's Kevin:
Robbie Keane Move Is Loan To Buy For West Ham - Cartilage Free Captain
According to rumors and the TV folks, the move is a loan with an option to buy. West Ham will take on all of his wages this season and will be able to purchase Keane for £6m if the Hammers are able to stay in the Premier League.
It really does seem as though West Ham are pinning their hopes on this one acquisition, which is somewhat terrifying if you’re a fan who happens to have seen Keane play against reasonable competition in the last two seasons (i.e not in the Scottish Premier League, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell with Celtc last season). Kevin points out just how much money could be saved if Keane does end up going to Upton Park permanently at the end of this deal.
Most Spurs fans will likely now be rooting for West Ham to stay up so that Harry Redknapp can have £65k per week off the books and an extra £6m to spend in the summer.
Unless my maths is totally wrong, a year and a half of Keane’s wages at £65,000 per week totals more than £5M. Combine that with the reported transfer fee and Spurs may have well over £10M as a result of West Ham’s lapse in judgement.
