November 2009 saw the end of Russian tennis player Marat Safin’s professional tennis career. Two years and a couple weeks later, Russia will be seeing a former ATP tour player run for parliament. Safin said Thursday he wants to put his words, which were often outburts on the court, into his government.
Marat Safin Running For Russian Parliament

“I am an intelligent guy and I have a lot to bring and a lot of ideas about things and what to do,” Safin said. “I am very committed to it.”
Safin, 31, is a two-time Grand Slam winner that compiled a 421-266 record with 15 career titles during his 12 years on the ATP tour. Safin held the world No. 1 ranking for nine weeks in 2000, the same year he won the U.S. Open. He is the only Russian in history to win the men’s side of the Grand Slam. His retirement came following the Paris Masters after a series of injuries.
“I could be the best looking guy in the Duma,” Safin said. “But that’s only because all the other guys are over 60.”
