The St. John's basketball squad had cultivated something of a reputation as a dragon slayer this season. They further cemented that reputation on Saturday with a dramatic 60-59 upset win over their Big East rival, No. 4 Pitt, and the Red Storm's Dwight Hardy emerged as the hero.
St. John’s 60, Pitt 59, Final Score: Dwight Hardy’s Last-Second Lay-In Shocks No. 4 Panthers
With 11 seconds remaining, the Pittsburgh Panthers sank a three to take a 59-58 lead. On the other end of the court, with 1.2 seconds remaining, Dwight Hardy managed to cut through heavy traffic and lob in a spectacular lay-up to take a lead that ultimately stood as the final score.
Hardy totaled 19 points in the game, as well as three steals. Justin Burrell chipped in with 15 points and eight rebounds. On Pittsburgh's side of the ball, Ashton Gibbs carried the Panthers with 26 points.
This is only Pitt’s third loss of the season; even with this defeat, the Panthers lead the Big East with a 12-2 conference record. St. John’s is 17-9 for the year. The Red Storm are unranked, but they’ve received some AP votes. Given that they’ve beaten No. 5 Duke, No. 13 UConn, and No. 4 Pitt over the last three weeks, they have every reason to hope for a spot in the top 25.
