Capitals Vs. Penguins: Featured Matchup Missing Featured Stars

The last few Capitals and Penguins matchups have been missing some key stars ever since the two teams met at the 2011 Winter Classic. The Sidney Crosby vs. Alex Ovechkin matchup doesn't work when one of those players hasn't played in almost two months.

The big news for the Penguins came before the game with the trade of Alex Goligoski to the Dallas Stars for James Neal and Matt Niskanen. The Penguins needed some offensive help, while the Stars made a move to clear some cap space for the impending signing of their star center Brad Richards.

Both teams are on the back end of back-to-back games. The Washington Capitals defeated the Buffalo Sabres yesterday afternoon, 2-1. Mathieu Perreault had a goal and an assist in the win and Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves in the win. The Penguins lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in a shootout, 3-2. Matt Cooke and Brett Sterling each scored a goal for the Penguins in the loss.

Game time is 7:30 pm ET, and for more information on this game, please visit our Capitals site, Japers’ Rink, and our Penguins site, Pensburgh.
