While the Penguins and Capitals are scoreless, the Penguins have had their fair share of chances in the first period. The Penguins are outshooting the Capitals 18-7 in the first period thanks in part to the three powerplays the team has had in the period. Alexander Semin, Scott Hannan, and Jason Chimera each took their turn in the penalty box for the Washington Capitals in the period. The Penguins couldn’t capitalize on those powerplays, something that may not be a shocker against a top five penalty killing team.
Capitals Vs. Penguins: Pittsburgh Powerplays Dominate The First Period
Micheal Neuvirth has done a good job in stopping the Penguins, flashing the leather quite a few times, making all 18 saves for the Capitals. Marc-Andre Fleury has only had to make seven saves thus far into the game.
Both teams are poised to continue to play a physical brand of hockey, especially against each other, over the next two periods of hockey.
