Adrian Beltre was real excited to sign on to an $80 million contract with the Rangers back in early January. Ever the professional, he spent much of the offseason working out and has put in a lot of work on the treadmill. However, it was that very treadmill exercise that's come back to bite him, as Beltre's currently fighting through a strained calf.
Adrian Beltre Shut Down By Rangers With Calf Strain
It’s only a Grade 1 strain - the lowest grade of all strains - so it isn’t too big of a problem. However, Beltre’s been limited in camp from the beginning, and since the strain hasn’t shown improvement over the past several days, the Rangers are going to shut him down completely for a little while to give him a chance to heal. It’s expected that he’ll take the weekend off, resume “light baseball workouts” early next week, and then look to get into some games in 10-14 days.
The team is in no way concerned that Beltre won't be ready for Opening Day. He does have a history of getting injured, but he doesn't have much of a history of muscle strains, and he's never had any problems with his calves. However, just because this is the sort of injury that can linger and flare up from time to time, count this as another reason for the Rangers to be glad they'll probably have Michael Young available to fill in around the infield as need be. The team may not be fond of his contract, but there's no denying his utility.
