Surprising almost no one who paid attention to the NFL this year, St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford was named Offensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press Friday night. The No. 1 pick out of Oklahoma in the 2010 draft won 44 of 50 votes, breezing past wideout Mike Williams of Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh center Maurkice Pouncey, who helped the Steelers to the Super Bowl but will be sidelined this weekend.
Sam Bradford Named Offensive Rookie Of The Year By AP
The Rams were 1-15 last year before Bradford helped key a surprise 7-9 season that almost snagged the NFC West title. (The division was won by another 7-9 team, the Seahawks. Don't ask.)
Bradford completed 60 percent of his passes (354-of-590) for 3,512 yards and 18 touchdowns against 15 interceptions. Despite having injury problems during his last season at Oklahoma, Bradford played in all 16 games for the Rams this year. And he was valuable to fans for more than the stats; he gave them a sense of hope, as our St. Louis blog, Turf Show Times, points out.
Drafting Sam Bradford represents the cornerstone of that future. Jaws dropped when Bradford signed a contract worth $78 million, but it was fair compensation for the job he had been picked to do.
Rams fans can finally look forward to football again.
So to recap: $78 million, Offensive Rookie of the Year, future of the franchise. That’s a pretty good first season, no?
