The NHL’s popular, innovative and awesome All-Star Fantasy Draft is returning for the 2012 All-Star festivities in Ottawa, according to Chris Johnston of the Canadian Press.
NHL All-Star Player Draft Returning In 2012, Report Says
After going through an informal debriefing following the first experiment with the format, Brendan Shanahan expects it to return in 2012 when the all-star game is held at Scotiabank Place. The NHL vice-president came up with the concept for the inaugural all-star draft that was used in Raleigh, N.C., earlier this year.
"I've talked to the players' association and a lot of the players that played in it, and everybody enjoyed it," Shanahan said Tuesday during the NHL's GM meetings. "I think we'll make some tweaks, but I don't think we'll make major changes."
So what will those tweaks be?
According to the report, there will still be a "last man standing" or a Mr. Irrelevant, just like Phil Kessel was back in January. The change might make it so the rules dictate a defenseman or a goalie is selected last, however. In 2010, the team captains had to pick their three goalies by the 10th round and they had to pick all defensemen by the 15th round, ensuring a forward would be selected last.
One change I’d like to see: don’t call it the “Fantasy Draft” again. The players are real and the game is real, right? What’s so fantasy about it?
