There aren't awards for things like this -- and in this case, there really shouldn't be -- but if there were, Xavier Boyce would certainly be in the running for most simultaneously unusual and sickening way for a football player to get in trouble with the law. What did the Virginia Tech wideout and his girlfriend allegedly do (allegedly)?
Virginia Tech’s Xavier Boyce Arrested For Child Abuse
Boyce and Olivia Hutchins, both 20 and Landstown High graduates, were arrested on charges of cruelty and injuries to children, Lt. Steve Taylor said.
Police believe the girl, who is less than a year old, was hurt Jan. 31 at the couple’s home in the 1200 block of University City Boulevard in Blacksburg, Taylor said. He said it appeared the girl had suffered internal head injuries.
Now, of course, all the caveats about guilty until proven innocent and not trying in the court of public opinion and so on. But this would obviously not be a case of “boys being boys,” such as public intoxication or driving without a license.
In any case, Boyce is suspended for now under Virginia Tech athletics department policy.
