Quick: What do Michigan State football, the Downtown Coaches Club and the Michigan State Lottery Commission all have in common? An investigation that has prompted the Spartans to distance themselves from the Downtown Coaches Club, a booster organization.
Michigan State Suspends Ties With Booster Group Under Investigation
“For several weeks, we have been aware that the Downtown Coaches Club had some financial reporting issues as well the review being conducted by the Michigan State Lottery Commission,” Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis said in a statement. “At that time, the Michigan State Athletics Department immediately suspended all activities with the organization. During the review process, we will assist the State of Michigan in any way possible.”
The irregularities apparently have something to do with the raffles the organization runs at sporting events -- thus the lottery commission’s involvement. In any case, Michigan State officials say that it doesn’t appear to be “wide-spread abuse.” The lottery commission, being a state agency involved in investigations, is doing what most such agencies do: Not commenting.
