An entire fan base held their breath as one on Saturday, when Wolves striker Kevin Doyle limped off the pitch in Dublin just 17 minutes into the Republic of Ireland’s match against Macedonia. Ireland won their Euro qualifier, 2-1, but that won’t be much consolation to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni stated that the damage was to Doyle’s medial knee ligament -- the same injury suffered by teammate Karl Henry, keeping him out for eight weeks.
Kevin Doyle Injury Could See Wolves Without Top Player For Rest Of Season
Those adept with numbers should be able to figure out that eight weeks would have Doyle returning for the final game of the season, when Wolves host Blackburn. In other words, this could very well be a season ending injury. Wolves are currently in 18th, just above Birmingham City and Wigan, but with nearly every team in the bottom 10 fearing relegation, the West Midlands club could have managed to escape the drop. But should Doyle, arguably the best player for Wolves, miss the rest of the season, relegation almost seems inevitable.
