In the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open, world No. 1 Rafael Nadal and world No. 3 Roger Federer made easy work of their opponents, moving them one step closer to a dual against one other in the Semifinal.
Sony Ericsson Open Update: Federer And Nadal Advance
Top-seed Nadal defeated countryman Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-3. The Spaniard has yet to drop serve in the tournament. The third-seeded Federer took a little longer to beat 13th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
World No. 2 Nadal Djokovic extended his win-streak to 20-0 when he defeated American James Blake in 52 minutes, 6-2, 6-0.
“It has been a dream run for me the last couple of months,” said Djokovic, who opened his year with an Australian Open triumph. “I’m playing the best tennis of my life.
While Belgian Kim Clijsters is on to the fourth round, world No. 1 Caroline Wozniack suffered a three-set upset, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
"Nothing was going on with my forehand, nothing was going on with my backhand, I lost the match,'' Wozniacki said. "I had so many chances in the first set. I had set points, and I didn't take them. Then the energy level dropped a little bit. That's what happens in sport."
World No. 51 Juan Martin del Potro was sidelined for eight months with a wrist injury in 2010. His opponent, Sweden's Robin Soderling, has won 20 matches and three titles in 2011. In Miami, Del Potro advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Soderling.
World No. 5 Andy Murray continued his slide, losing his fourth straight match when he was defeated by world No. 118, America Alex Bogomolov Jr., 6-1, 7-5.
American Andy Roddick called the trainer several times during his match. It was reported he suffered from sickness or a lower body injury. Roddick was the defending champion of the Sony Ericsson. He was thrown from the tournament with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) defeat.
The champion in Miami will walk away with $611,000 - but Nadal, Federer and Djokovic just won’t be going after the money or the title, but the points that could shuffle the order around of the ATP’s top three players.
