Freddy Sanchez, Giants Agree To One-Year Extension

This isn't the most important news in the world, but few things are. Friday morning, word has broken that Freddy Sanchez and the San Francisco Giants have agreed to a one-year contract extension worth $6 million.

In October of 2009, Sanchez signed a two-year contract with the Giants worth $6 million in 2010 and $6 million in 2011. It isn’t too difficult to imagine how they arrived at the new contract details. Given inflation, the $6 million Sanchez will make in 2012 will be worth a little less than the $6 million he made in 2010, but then, Sanchez is an aging middle infielder, so the value decline follows the projected performance decline.

The 33-year-old Sanchez has hit .291 for the Giants since coming over from the Pirates in a trade, and he's known for his ability to put the bat on the ball. The second baseman hit second in Bruce Bochy's Opening Day lineup, and for better or worse, he's a classic fit for that spot in the order.
