Jimmer Fredette Named AP Player Of The Year, Mike Brey Earns Coaching Honor
Fredette, who led the Cougars to one of the program's best seasons ever, earned 48 of the 65 votes from the same national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25 for the AP. Kemba Walker of Connecticut was second with 11 votes, while Duke's Nolan Smith finished with five. Ohio Stat's Jared Sullinger tallied one vote as well. The voting is completed before the NCAA Tournament starts.
In the same voting, the AP selected Notre Dame’s Mike Brey as the 2011 coach of the year.
Brey led the Fighting Irish to a 27-7 overall record, a second-place finish in the Big East and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. He becomes the first coach from Notre Dame to win the award after earning 28 of the 65 votes. San Diego State’s Jeff Fisher was second with 14 votes.
