Ian Stewart Optioned By Rockies

The Colorado Rockies optioned third baseman Ian Stewart to AAA Colorado Springs today. Though it was a little surprising at how quickly in the season the move happened, it was hardly a surprise considering the myriad of different players the Rockies could play at third base.

Stewart, who hit .256/.338/.443 for the Rockies last year, was struggling early on this season, with just two hits in his first 26 at-bats. His defense has always been a work in progress, and with both Jose Lopez and Ty Wigginton on the roster, the Rockies felt that they could afford to let Stewart work out his struggles in the minor leagues.

Stewart had a rough start to his spring, spraining the MCL in his right knee, and then fighting off a hamstring issue in his left knee.

Lopez and Wigginton haven’t exactly hit the cover off the ball either, but Stewart still had a minor-league option left, which made him the obvious target if there was a roster crunch.
