Two weeks after getting sent to the minors, Opening Day third baseman Ian Stewart is back in the majors with the Rockies.
Ian Stewart Recalled From Triple-A By Rockies
Stewart was sent down after collecting just two hits in his first 26 at-bats while playing irregularly. In his absence, the Rockies still haven’t gotten much production from third base. Meanwhile, in 11 games with triple-A Colorado Springs, Stewart batted .361 with three home runs and 13 RBI.
For his part, Stewart had a good attitude during his stint in the minors, but is resolute about playing regularly now that he’s back up. David Ramsey (via the Colorado Springs Gazette):
The word potential follows Stewart, and with good reason. He’s blessed with immense gifts. The question is if he will ever fully harness them.
“It’s definitely still there,” Stewart said, referring to his talent. “But for me to produce and to play up to my ability, I have to play every day.
“Coming down here, most of it was on me. I wasn’t producing, so there’s no hard feelings, but if they want the results, I got to play every day.”
Stewart doesn’t hide his expectations; he’s virtually demanding to play full time for the Rockies. In the course of a 10-minute conversation, he mentioned his need to play “every day” four times.
It’s not like anybody else has taken advantage of Stewart’s absence. Jose Lopez has started 11 games at third base and is batting .149, and overall Colorado’s third baseman are batting .134 this season. Aside from getting Ty Wigginton the occasional at-bats, there’s no reason not to play Ian Stewart every day.
