Facing almost impossible odds, the Toronto Blue Jays rallied against Mariano Rivera on Tuesday night and later walked off over the New York Yankees, winning 6-5 in ten innings.
Yankees Vs. Blue Jays: Mariano Rivera Blows Save, Toronto Walks Off In Ten
With A.J. Burnett and rookie Kyle Drabek going head-to-head, the Blue Jays drew first blood on a Jose Bautista solo home run in the bottom of the first. The Yankees took a 2-1 lead in the next half inning, but an Aaron Hill RBI sac fly in the third knotted things up.
It stayed 2-2 into the sixth, when Mark Teixeira took Drabek deep for his sixth home run of the season. The two-run shot put the Yankees up 4-2, and while Edwin Encarnacion doubled a run home in the bottom of the sixth, Curtis Granderson restored the two-run advantage with a solo bomb in the top of the seventh.
The Yankees would hand that 5-3 lead to Rivera to begin the bottom of the ninth. There's never any reason to believe that Rivera will be unable to handle a two-run advantage, but on this night, the Blue Jays got to him. Yunel Escobar led off with a double, advanced to third on a grounder, and scored on a wild pitch that was also ball four to Jose Bautista. Adam Lind then singled to put runners on the corners, and John McDonald followed by placing a squeeze bunt up the first base line on which Teixeira was unable to make a play at home. That bunt tied the game, and the Blue Jays very nearly won it moments later before Rivera induced a bases-loaded double play to move the game to the tenth.
Jon Rauch kept the Yankees off the board in the top, setting up Ivan Nova for the bottom. Edwin Encarnacion led off with a single. The next two batters hit long fly outs, but Travis Snider ripped a two-out double to deep center that sent Encarnacion sprinting around third and safely into home for the dramatic walk-off win.
The Blue Jays improved to 8-9, while the Yankees fell to 9-6. On Wednesday, the series concludes with Bartolo Colon and Brett Cecil.
