Scott Rolen's shoulder problems, long a bane, are back. MLB.com's Mark Sheldon:
Reds’ Scott Rolen Placed On DL With Shoulder Injury
After waiting a couple of days, the Reds placed 3B Scott Rolen on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder. Rolen received two injections on his shoulder Thursday and hoped to play after a couple of days.
A huge (if unappreciated) part of the Reds’ success last season, Rolen’s showed good power this season but hits the DL with a .217 batting average.
The Reds are filling Rolen's roster spot with prospect Chris Valaika, who's been playing mostly second base in Triple-A, and has shown little power in the high minors. In Rolen's absence, Miguel Cairo and power-hitting -- in the minors, anyway -- Juan Francisco figure to see most of the playing time at third base.
Meanwhile, Rolen’s injury has to be a concern even beyond the couple of weeks he’s slated for the Disabled List, considering the impact such problems have had on his career for many years.
