One of the bigger surprises of last season was Scott Rolen's ability to stay healthy. The talented but oft-injured third baseball has missed more than 50 games in three different seasons, and last season was the first since 2006 that he missed the disabled list entirely. His luck didn't last, though, as he was put on the DL on April 24 with a strained left shoulder.
Scott Rolen Activated From Disabled List, Returns To Starting Lineup
The Reds are activating Rolen today, though, and he is in the starting lineup on Friday night against his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals. Rolen did not play in a minor-league rehab game, so this will be his first action since going on the disabled list.
Before he was hurt, Rolen was hitting for a little doubles power, but not much else, with a .217/.246/.417 line in 60 at-bats. In Rolen's absence, Miguel Cairo and Chris Valaika filled in quite ably, with Cairo hitting .324/.390/.351 as a starter following Rolen's injury, and Valaika hitting .313/.353/.500 over 16 at-bats.
