It's a sad, sad Saturday for fans of the Washington Nationals. To review: Star third baseman Ryan Zimmerman has been out of action since the beginning of April with an abdominal injury. His rehab seemed to be coming along until last week, when it was reported that he probably wouldn't be back for a while. Troubled by the lack of progress, Zimmerman met with another doctor on Saturday, and the results of the visit are not good:
Ryan Zimmerman Injury Requires Surgery
Nationals' Ryan Zimmerman needs surgery, believed to be for sports hernia. Two sources say out til break, another says not that long.
More on Zim: Isolated tear of rectus muscle. Surgery in Philly on Tuesday. Six weeks of rehabilitation.
Where it seemed before that pretty much all that was standing between Zimmerman and a return to the Nationals was a minor-league rehab assignment, now he’ll have to go under the knife, and this will not be a minor operation. Based on that tweeted timetable, Zimmerman will be out for the next six weeks, at least.
So the Nationals will have to keep leaning on Alex Cora and Jerry Hairston Jr. for far longer than anyone would like. The only real upside here is that the Nationals weren't playing for much in 2011 anyway. Whew.
