Bruce Chen Injury: Strained Left Lat Puts Royals’ Starter On Shelf

Kansas City Royals starter Bruce Chen was put on the disabled list on Tuesday with a strained left lat, an injury that has plagued him before. Chen was scheduled to start against the New York Yankees, but Vin Mazzaro will get the start instead after being called up. From Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star:

#Royals to put LHP Bruce Chen on 15-day DL because of strained left lat. RHP Vin Mazzaro will be recalled from Omaha and start Wednesday ..After playing for 10 teams in 13 seasons, Chen has seemingly found a home in Kansas City, throwing 140 quality innings for the Royals last season, and getting off to a quick start this year. He is 4-1 in 2011, with a 3.59 ERA in 43 innings.

Mazzaro came over from the Athletics as one of the main components of the David DeJesus deal, and the 24-year-old right-hander was holding his own in Triple-A Omaha, throwing 25 innings and striking out 27.
