Doc Rivers, Boston Celtics Negotiating New Contract, According To Report

With the season over, the Boston Celtics are wasting no time in signing their head coach, Doc Rivers, to a new contract. Just moments after the Celtics bowed out of the playoffs, Rivers told reporters he was leaning heavily toward returning; now the Associated Press (via USA Today) reports that the Celtics and Rivers are discussing a multi-year contract that would have the coach leading his team into an expected rebuilding era in a few years.

Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett are close to the end of their current contracts, putting retirement closer to now than in the future. Paul Pierce would likely be the pivot figure to help Rivers during the transition, as he has several years left on his contract. But for now, Rivers and the Big Three will give it one more shot for a championship.

Rivers is 336-238 in seven seasons as the Celtics coach and led the team to an NBA Championship in 2008. In addition, Boston has made the playoffs five of the seven years Rivers has coached and made a return to the NBA Finals in 2010 before losing to the Lakers this season.
