Doc Rivers’ Contract Extension With Boston Celtics Worth $35 Million, According To Report

Doc Rivers' contract extension with the Boston Celtics is worth $35 million over five years, reports Yahoo!'s ace Adrian Wojnarowski. That should make Doc the highest paid coach in the NBA next season, now that Phil Jackson -- who made $12 million in each of the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers -- has retired.

Rivers' last contract paid the coach $5.5 million in 2010-11. He had signed an extension in 2008, after he led the Celtics to their 17th NBA championship just a year after the team finished with the league's second worst record. That contract extension paid Rivers $11 million over the two most recently completed seasons. Boston made the NBA Finals in 2010, losing to the Lakers in seven game. The Celtics were knocked out of the 2011 playoffs on Wednesday, falling 4-1 to the Miami Heat.

Rivers had been rumored to be considering an early retirement to watch his son Austin play at Duke next season. But Rivers said after the Celtics’ loss that he wanted to come back, and the franchise quickly reached a deal.
