File this one under total speculation at this point, but it's worth mentioning. According to Calico News, the Italian side AS Roma, now owned by American Thomas R. DiBenedetto, are looking to acquire the services Los Angeles Galaxy star Landon Donovan.
AS Roma Looking To Sign Landon Donovan?
Donovan has had stints overseas in Germany and most recently with Everton in the English Premier League and there has been speculation during nearly every recent transfer window about where the US international might or might not go. It makes sense that Roma's new American-based ownership group would be interested in bringing a big name US star to help with both on-field play and marketing the team here in the states.
Donovan has been on fire in May with five goals in the Galaxy’s last four matches, giving him seven already this season. He’s fourth all-time in MLS with 110 career goals. A solid performance in the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup could push Donovan’s stock higher than ever.
At this point though, it’s all rumors and speculation, but it’s definitely a story with keeping any eye on as the summer transfer window approaches. There has been a long running debate amongst fans and media alike about where Donovan should be playing and whether a transfer to Europe would benefit the 29-year-old. This story, and likely many others like it, are sure to rekindle the debate over the next couple months.
