In a game against the Tigers on May 7, Blue Jays first baseman Adam Lind developed some discomfort in his back. It was initially considered a day-to-day concern, but Lind hasn't been able to get himself into the lineup since, and so on Monday night the Blue Jays finally placed him on the disabled list. The assignment is retroactive to May 8, so Lind will be eligible to return next week.
Adam Lind Placed On DL With Back Injury
The injury came at a bad time for Lind, who was just heating up. Lind was sitting on a .599 OPS on April 24, but he went 21-for-46 in his next 12 games with six home runs, raising his OPS to .858. He was the guy protecting Jose Bautista in the Toronto lineup, and had been doing a great job of it before tweaking his back.
Edwin Encarnacion and rookie David Cooper have split time at first base during Lind's absence, and will continue to do so until Lind returns. Lind's 25-man roster spot, meanwhile, has been taken by 24-year-old outfielder Eric Thames, who's making his first trip to the Major Leagues. He has a 1.029 OPS in the early going with AAA Las Vegas.
