Anyone expecting Manchester City to spend ridiculous amounts of money this summer is mistaken, according to chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak. City have splashed out vast quantities of cash over the past few summers, and with a major windfall arriving in the form of Champions league qualification there were fears that the owners would take the team's spending to even higher pinnacles. Not so, says al-Mubarak:
Premier League Transfer Rumors: No Spending Spree For Manchester City
It won’t be like last summer, or the summer before. What you will see this year is strengthening the squad in areas that we feel require more depth. We don’t need quantity, as today we have quality. We just need a couple of players.
It's unclear just where Manchester City would be looking to upgrade, but their stance of incremental improvements may have to change should captain Carlos Tevez choose to depart the Eastlands. Although City boast one of the Premier League's most solid defences, they've had some trouble scoring goals without Tevez involved, and the Argentinian striker has been making some noise about moving away from England soon.
No matter what, though, this statement will give the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea some relief - both clubs are going to be chasing big names over the summer and the last thing that they'd want is to get involved in a bidding war with City.
