Pittsburgh's Pedro Alvarez has been struggling with a sore quadriceps muscle since earlier this month -- which might help explain his terrible hitting stats -- and the Pirates have finally decided to give him a stretch of rest and rehap. Here's Colin Dunlap (via Pittsburgh Post-Gazette):
Pedro Alvarez Injury: Pirates 3B Hits DL With Quad Problem
Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right quadriceps injury.
Infielder Pedro Ciriaco, as earlier reported, has been recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis and is scheduled to join the team today.
Ciriaco's regarded as a solid (and perhaps outstanding) defensive shortstop, but he's a fringe prospect because of his bat, and he's got a .261 on-base percentage in a season's worth of Triple-A games. With Alvarez out, the Pirates have a real chance to see what Brandon Wood can do as an every-day player. With Ronny Cedeno ensconced at shortstop -- for better or worse -- Ciriaco figures to spend most of his time on the bench.
