The Pirates are making a valiant quest for their first .500 season since Barry Bonds left, but they'll have to do it without third baseman Pedro Alvarez for just a little longer. From Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com:
Pedro Alvarez Injury: Quad Tweaked Again, Rehab Shut Down
Pedro Alvarez has retweaked his quad and is no longer able to play in extended spring gamesAny march toward respectability was supposed to be joined by the 24-year-old slugger, who hit .256/.326/.461 in a promising rookie campaign just last year. Alvarez was scuffling this year, though, as his batting average and on-base percentage dropped precipitously and his power was way down, too. If he hadn’t been hurt, he might have been demoted for a bit of confidence-building.
In Alvarez's absence, the Pirates have been playing Brandon Wood, a move that has helped a number of teams, none of which were the Pirates. Lately, Josh Harrison has been getting some starts at third as well.
