Indians Vs. Rays: David Price Fans 12 En Route To Win, Pizza

Price struck out a dozen over seven scoreless innings, and the Rays shut out the winningest team in baseball.

Friday night, David Price was good for one win and several thousand pizzas. The Rays' left-hander set a career high with 12 strikeouts, and the bullpen shut the door on the Indians to secure a 5-0 win.

After consecutive starts in which he gave up five runs, Price silenced Cleveland's bats, allowing only four hits through seven innings. (He also managed to evade a homicidal shattered bat, which you can see at Mocksession.) Joel Peralta and Adam Russell were good for a scoreless inning of work apiece.

Casey Kotchman, suddenly everyone's favorite journeyman first baseman, hit his second home run of the season, and Sam Fuld was good for a pair of RBI as well as a spectacular running catch in left-center field.

The Rays now stand at 27-23, a game and a half behind the A.L. East-leading Red Sox. Despite dropping their third straight contest, the 30-18 Indians still hold the best record in baseball.

Tropicana Field ticket-holders win a free Papa John’s pizza every time a Rays pitcher deals 10 or more strikeouts. The announced attendance figure at Tropicana Field was only 16,800. If Price can make a habit of recording double-digit punch-outs, he may just encourage more fans to show up for home games, because pizza is delicious.
