Francisco Liriano Injury: Sore Shoulder Scratches Twins Lefthander Saturday

Does it seem as if there are more pitching injuries than usual this season?

If so, add one more to your list. The Twins announced last night on their website that lefthander Francisco Liriano would miss his scheduled start on Saturday against the Angels due to a sore shoulder.

Liriano has had an up-and-down season. He started out with an unsightly 9.13 ERA in his first five starts, then threw a totally unexpected no-hitter against the White Sox on May 3. After a rough outing in the ensuing start, he put together two good starts against the Mariners and Diamondbacks to lower his season ERA to 5.73.

Anthony Swarzak, who made one start earlier this year on April 28, will take Liriano's place for this evening's game against the Angels. Swarzak also made 12 starts for the Twins in 2009.

Manager Ron Gardenhire told Twins beat writer Joe Christensen he hoped Liriano would miss only one start. But how many times have you heard that from managers or general managers?
