Francisco Liriano Injury: Twins Lefty Hits DL With Shoulder Strain

Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano started against the Orioles on Thursday afternoon, but lasted only two innings. After the game we found out why, from 1500 ESPN's Judd Zulgad:

Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told reporters Thursday morning he had never been involved in a season filled with so many injuries.

It only got worse later in the day.

Twins starter Francisco Liriano left the team's game against the Baltimore Orioles at Target Field after two innings because of a posterior strain in his thowing (left) shoulder.

After the game, the Twins announced Liriano would have an MRI and be placed on the disabled list, with Scott Diamond getting the call from Triple-A Rochester to start Friday's series opener against Detroit.

This has certainly been an uneven season for Liriano.

Before the season, there were rumors suggesting the Twins’ dissatisfaction might lead to a trade.

That didn’t happen, obviously. Instead, Liriano opened the season in the rotation, was hung with a 9.13 ERA through his first five starts ... and pitched a no-hitter in his sixth start. Later, Liriano spent a couple of weeks on the Disabled List with shoulder inflammation, but this recurrence seems more serious. According to Rotoworld, Liriano’s likely to need around three weeks of rest, which would leave him with only two or three starts before season’s end. And if it comes to that, the Twins might just shut down Liriano and work on getting him ready for next spring.

Before Thursday’s early exit, Liriano had pitched adequate baseball in his 14 starts since coming off the DL in early June.
