Here's what we knew: Jonathan Broxton has been bad for a long time. His elbow kind of hurt. An MRI ruled out severe structural damage, but showed a bone spur and a bruise. So Broxton was sent to the DL and instructed not to throw for 2-3 weeks.
Jonathan Broxton May Miss Another Six Weeks
Now we have a bit more of a timetable for his return. Via Dylan Hernandez:
Mattingly said Broxton could be out for another six weeks.
It makes sense when you think about it. When a pitcher doesn’t throw for 2-3 weeks, he needs to rebuild his arm strength before he’s ready to come back to the majors. And arm strength doesn’t build up overnight. Broxton will need some time to get his arm going, and then he’ll presumably go on a minor league rehab assignment, and when it’s all said and done he may have missed nearly two months.
When he does return, it'll be interesting to see what role he occupies. But for the time being, the Dodgers will lean on Vicente Padilla as the closer, with Hong-Chih Kuo as support in case Padilla fails.
