Tottenham Hotspur's 1-1 draw against Blackpool at White Hart Lane last weekend didn't just hurt their attempt to run down Manchester City for the last open Champions League slot - it also came at the cost of losing PFA Player of the Year Gareth Bale for the season with an ankle injury after a nasty tackle from Blackpool skipper Charlie Adam in the second half. Fortunately for Bale and Tottenham, his ankle is not broken, but a scan on Monday revealed that he has ruptured ankle ligaments and may not even be fit in time for preseason. Spurs manager Harry Redknaap discussed the tackle, describing it as 'enthusiastic':
Gareth Bale Injury Forces PFA Player Of The Year Out For The Season
It was a bad challenge by Charlie but it’s out of character for him. He caught him but having met the boy a few times and spoken to him, I don’t think he’s that type of lad who would go and purposely try to do somebody like that.
It was an enthusiastic tackle but it was a bad tackle and he could have easily seen a red card. He came into the dressing room afterwards and apologised.
While I don’t think anyone believes Charlie Adam went in attempting to hurt Bale (and really, how would you know?), what was clear right at the beginning is that his challenge was reckless, dangerous and could (and did) badly hurt the victim. The fact that he wasn’t issued a booking for that nonsense is, in layman’s terms, crazy. Presumably the Premier league will claim that since the referee saw it and took no action other than to award Spurs a free kick, the case is closed.
