The Toronto Raptors have fired Jay Triano as head coach. The Raptors announced the move shortly after Doug Smith of the Toronto Star broke the news. Toronto announced that Triano will remain with the franchise as a consultant to general manager Bryan Colangelo, who recently signed a long-term contract extension.
Jay Triano Fired As Raptors Coach
Triano, the league’s first Canadian-born head coach, took over for Sam Mitchell during the 2008-09 season, and failed to take the Raptors to the NBA Playoffs over his tenure. Triano leaves the bench with a 87-142 career record; he’s been with the Raptors franchise for a decade as an assistant and head coach. He preceded Leo Rautins as the head coach of the Canadian men’s national team, and now serves as an assistant for the U.S. team.
It's unclear whether replacing Triano was a condition of Colangelo's extension, and whether the Raptors will consider current assistant coaches Alex English, P.J. Carlesimo or Alvin Williams for the job.
